Frequently Asked Questions

When and where does the club meet?

We train Thursdays and Saturdays from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at:

St. Alphonsus Parish
11828 85 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5B 3E9
(Enter through the green door on the east side of the building, toward the back.)

Doors usually open around 6:30 pm, and we encourage members and newcomers to arrive early to help prepare the space and equipment.

How old do I have to be?

Generally, participants should be 16 or older.
Our training is competitive and involves sparring with adults. At this time, we do not offer youth classes.

What do I need to start?

For your first class, please bring:

  • Comfortable athletic clothing

  • Non-marking indoor shoes

  • An athletic cup (groin protection)

  • A water bottle

Everything else will be provided through loaner gear.

Do I need to know or learn Deutsch / Early New High German?

No. While some historical terms come from German and other traditions, we explain everything in plain language. You’ll never be required to learn a new language to train with us.

What is the cost of gear?

Your initial cost is low when you start, the only protective item we require you to bring is an athletic cup.
If you later decide to purchase your own full set of equipment (instead of relying on loaner gear), expect to invest around $1,000 - $1,500. Masks, gloves, and jackets are the biggest expenses.
For full details, see our Gear Expectations page.

What gear do I need?

Our full list is outlined in our Gear Expectations and Guide (pdf). This covers required gear, recommended upgrades, and what order to buy items in.

Where can I get gear?

There are several HEMA gear distributors within Canada, and many manufacturers ship directly to customers. We can provide recommendations based on your budget and needs.
